There was this woman at church that played quite often, and I was just fascinated by it.
So, you know, little kids, they go through phases, "Oh, I wanna be a fireman," "I wanna be a," whatever, and I was just obsessed with the violin.
And I mentioned this to my mother, who was a little reluctant at first.
She was, "Well, just...just wait.
Let's just see what happens."
I kept bugging her.
I would not stop bugging her.
There was also this picture book.
I can't remember what it was.
It was some music book or something that I had.
I remember there was a painting of a violin, and I would just study the picture.
I just was obsessed.
And finally she said, "If we're gonna do this, "we're gonna be serious about it.
"This isn't gonna be something you're gonna "just try for a little bit.
This is something we should be serious about."
And I said, "Yes, I wanna do it.

And I have a twin brother, Jason, who also decided, "Well, I guess I'll do it.

And I remember the film music, particularly of John Williams.
When you're a child, you don't really understand what it is that's happening.
You don't really think about the fact that this is a job, somebody's composing music.
You just associate this magic that happens along with the story that you're watching, whether it's like "Star Wars" or "E.T."
When I realized all this music that I love, particularly "E.T.," "Indiana Jones," "Superman," "Star Wars," it was all written by the same person.
It was this man named John Williams, and then it clicked; This is something that you can do.
This is something that's a job that people have.
And so, then it turned into this love and fascination for film music and orchestral music in general, both classical music, Broadway.
I developed a love for musical theater when I was in high school, and it was just a pursuit of all these things that made me feel a certain way.
And I just loved the way that movie music, particularly orchestral classic film scores, made me feel.
And developing my violin skills into music theory and composition, one of my violin teachers in Redlands who-- he was very keen on fiddle music and bluegrass, and so I got a little taste of that.
But he also taught music theory, and that was so important.
Because I don't think a lot of teachers do that by default, but he certainly did.
And that helped so much in developing the skills and the knowledge and the ability to compose music.

I was just hanging out in the back, just walking around.
And there was an idea I had been thinking about that I wanted to propose to the Bowl administration about a concert I wanted to do, a patriotic concert for the 4th of July weekend.
I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to have a symphonic, "patriotic pops concert that could feature some "movie music that's in line with patriotic music "and some patriotic pieces, some classic Americana, "maybe with some choir, maybe some solo vocalists?
I think that would be such a great idea."
And as I was thinking about that, Valerie walked up to me and said, "Nolan, we have this idea that we'd like to run by you.
"We were thinking about doing a patriotic pops concert with orchestra and maybe some choir."
She basically relayed to me the exact idea that I had!
And so, we were perfectly in sync.
And then, we just decided to get the ball rolling and plan this thing.
And it was so much fun.
And so, of course, being a lover of John Williams and that sound, we chose to do the "Olympic Fanfare," which is great for the American spirit.
It's so uplifting.
Something else special that I thought would be great would be to open the concert with the "Redlands Bowl Centennial Fanfare" that I composed for the centennial a few years ago.
Then following that, there was this great piece called "Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland that we had done previously.
But it occurred to me, if we're going to do a piece about Lincoln, we have something very special here in Redlands that's very unique.
And it occurred to me we could do something very specific to this location.
And so, I looked across the street at this beautiful building that I would visit as a kid, and I loved it, and I thought, "What if we created something brand new for this occasion?
"And not just as a tribute to Lincoln "and the Lincoln Shrine, but also the 250th celebration of the birth of the nation."
So, I composed a piece of music with some help from my brother called "A Just and Lasting Peace."
And we had narration that talked about Robert Watchorn and the history of the shrine, how it all came to be, his motivation for it.
And if you look around the building, you'll see there's sayings and phrases, bits of speeches from Lincoln carved on the building.
And I thought it would be a wonderful moment to have all of these speeches presented along with music.
And so, I wrote a piece of music that's I feel very patriotic in nature, very orchestral, very inspired by that John Williams sound that I love so much.
And so, we put together this beautiful presentation with a slideshow, great pictures and imagery of the history of the shrine.

(audience applauding) ♪ (light thoughtful music) ♪ ♪ (bright trumpets) ♪ - [Nathan] Nestled quietly among the orange groves and historic streets of Redlands stands a place of reflection, reverence, and memory, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine.
It's more than a building of stone and marble.
It is a testament to a nation's enduring respect for one man whose leadership helped hold it together.
- [Hilary] The story of the shrine begins with Robert Watchorn, a British-born industrialist who, in 1880, immigrated to America where he found work in the coal mines of Pennsylvania.
Watchorn saw in America the ability to improve your circumstances if you are willing to study hard, work diligently, and apply yourself, something which Abraham Lincoln himself called the "right to rise."
- [Gustavo] In 1921, Robert and his wife Alma lost their heroic son Ewart as a result of service to his country.
As a way to memorialize their fallen son, the Watchorns had a vision of building a shrine in their winter home of Redlands.
Deeply moved by the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln, Watchorn envisioned a place where Lincoln's ideals, unity, humility, and sacrifice could be preserved and shared with future generations.
His passion was not casual admiration, it was a lifelong devotion that ultimately shaped one of the most unique memorials in the United States.
The only such museum and archive west of the Mississippi River dedicated solely to the study of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War.
- [Ralph] By placing the shrine in Redlands, the Watchorns knew this monument of ideals would be available to the increasing number of people moving into Southern California.
It was, in Robert's words, "accessible yet secluded."
He said, "It will be a very happy event for me "if I can be the means of introducing Abraham Lincoln "to a few whose hearts I know beat in true unison "with the ideals of Lincoln.
"Ideals, the advancement of which made him immortal, "with the extension of these ideals that will undoubtedly be a better world."
♪ (evocative orchestral music swells) ♪ - [Nathan] Construction of the shrine began in 1931, at a time when the memory of the American Civil War still echoed through the nation's identity.
Watchorn personally funded the project, ensuring that every detail reflected dignity and permanence.
The building was completed and dedicated in 1932 at a ceremony held right here at the Redlands Bowl and was carefully designed to evoke solemnity rather than grandeur, a place not of spectacle, but of contemplation.
- [Hilary] Unlike many memorials that rely on scale or ornamentation, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine draws its power from its intimacy.
