It sure is great to see Eddie and his teacher coming to the rescue for that perrito.

They remind me of my favorite superhero: Bell Man!

(deep chiming bell) He can ding faster than the speed of sound!

He's always helping people when they're in trouble.

And, like Eddie and his teacher, he also cares about animals in need.

Bell Man has a lot of amazing superpowers.

Hmm.

I wonder if I was a superhero, what powers would I have?

♪ Well, while I ponder that, let's get you to your first class!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - Aw.

Take it easy, little buddy.

You're safe.

You have nothing to worry about, little guy.

We put posters up all over the place and we're gonna find your family in no time.

I'm sure of it.

♪ Hi, everyone.

I'm Miss Dorothy, and today we're going to learn about a very important word: compassion.

Compassion means being kind to others when they feel sad and offering help to make them feel better, even if it's in a small way.

When you care about someone deeply, you have compassion for them.

Have you ever felt compassion for someone?

Our friend Eddie felt compassion for this little puppy.

He wanted to make sure to find his family because dogs can be very important to us.

And today, I have a very special book to share with you about how certain types of dogs can help their owners in special ways.

It's called "Daniel the Dog," written by Lynn Walker and illustrated by Rebecque Asher.

♪ (reading the book) "D is for Daniel the Dog.

"Daniel is a very special dog.

"Daniel is a guide dog.

"He helps people who are blind.

"Sam is blind.

"He needs help to do some things because he cannot see.

"Daniel is Sam's dog.

"He is also Sam's best friend.

"Sam needs to buy food.

"He tells Daniel to help him go to the grocery store.

"What is the first thing Daniel does?

"He finds Sam's keys!

"Then, he gives the keys to Sam.

"Daniel wears a special harness when he is working.

"Sam holds on to the harness.

"Together, they walk down the street to the grocery store.

"Daniel is very smart.

"He knows the way to the grocery store.

"He stops at every curb.

"He is making the walk safe for Sam.

"Now, Sam and Daniel are at the grocery store.

"Sam wants to pay.

"But Daniel knows that Sam is forgetting something.

"What do you think Sam is forgetting?

"Dog food!

"Daniel leads Sam down the aisle to the dog food!

"Daniel is a very smart AND hungry guide dog!"

Oh, wow!

I love that story!

Daniel is such an extraordinary dog.

Did you know that it takes between 18 to 24 months for a dog to become a guide dog?

That's almost two years of training.

And, the best dog breeds for becoming a guide dog are German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, and golden retrievers, just like Daniel.

They use those breeds because they are smart, friendly, and obedient.

But most of all, these guide dogs are compassionate to their owners' needs.

Guide dogs are simply incredible.

(bell ringing) Oh!

There's Barry.

I wonder how he feels about compassion.

Let's go.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] That's one important trait all superheroes have: compassion.

It's like being a superhero for someone's heart.

Compassion is when you care about how others feel.

And if they're feeling a little sad, compassion is the power that you have to help them feel better again.

Oh!

Oh!

So if I was a superhero, I'd call myself, Barry the Super Compassionate Bell!

No, that doesn't have a good RING to it.

How about Barry the Caring Bell Boy?

Ah?!

No, no, no.

Well, why don't you see what Eddie's up to in the library?

Uh?

Barry the Super Compassionate, Sympathetic, Empathetic, Kind, Benevolent, Sensitive... (playful horn honking) ♪ - [Eddie] Good news, everybody!

The posters we put up, they worked!

And, we found the dog's family.

And, the puppy's name is Bon Bon.

They took his collar off to give him a bath this morning and he ran out the yard.

They were so worried.

It's a good thing he ended up here at school and that I found him before anything happened.

When the family came to pick him up, they gave me a big hug and they said that I was a compassionate young man.

And, you know?

That really got me thinking a lot about how special dogs can be and how many different things they can do to help us.

Check out this video.

(computer keys clicking) - [Narrator] Dogs can be a wonderful addition to our families and homes, as a pet and as a best friend.

But, some dogs are incredibly special because they have unique abilities that help people in very meaningful ways.

Herding dogs like border collies and Australian shepherds are highly intelligent and energetic, perfect for managing flocks of sheep.

They use their natural instincts and training to guide animals safely across fields, helping farmers with daily tasks that would be a lot harder without their help.

Search and rescue dogs are trained to find missing people during emergencies and natural disasters like earthquakes or avalanches.

Their strong sense of smell and their determination make them vital team members of lifesaving missions.

Therapy dogs offer emotional support to people in hospitals, assisted living centers, schools, or even after suffering from difficult events.

Their calm and friendly nature helps ease anxiety and brings joy to those who need it the most.

These roles show how dogs can use their unique skills to make the world a better, safer, and more comforting place.

[dog barking] - [Eddie] Wow!

Our canine companions can be so good to us humans.

Oh!

Now I know why they're called "man's best friend!"

My dog, Paco, can't do most of the things we saw in the video, but he sure is good at playing fetch, taking long naps, and at being my best friend.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Okay!

I finally thought of my superhero name: Captain Ring.

I can just picture it now.

(dreamy music) ♪ Captain Ring to the rescue!

I'm here to help anyone in need and to spread happiness and laughter.

Woo-hoo!

Hoo-hoo-hoo!

Wow!

How do I steer myself?

Uh?!

Head over to the classroom while I snap out of my daydream before I crash!

Wooh!?!

(wailing) Hoo-hoo-hoo!

(wailing) (bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Dorothy] Today, we learned what the word "compassion" means and how important it is to care for others, whether they are people or animals.

In today's story, Daniel the Dog showed us the compassionate and incredible things a guide dog can do for its owner.

"Daniel is very smart.

"He knows the way to the grocery store.

"He stops at every curb.

He is making the walk safe for Sam."

Then, Eddie researched what other things service dogs can do to help people.

- [Narrator] Herding dogs guide animals safely across fields.

Search and rescue dogs are trained to find missing people.

Therapy dogs offer emotional support to those who need it the most.

♪ - And, Barry learned that you don't have to be a superhero to be compassionate.

- Compassion.

It's like being a superhero for someone's heart.

Compassion is when you care about how others feel.

And if they're feeling a little sad, compassion is the power that you have to help them feel better again.

- [Miss Dorothy] Compassion.

It's like giving a hug, sharing your toy, or saying something nice to make people feel better.

It's about being gentle and caring with others just like you'd want them to be with you.

So, go on out there and spread as much compassion and love as you can.

I think you're going to find that it's going to make the world a much nicer place.

Y, al igual que Eddie y su maestra, Bell Man también se preocupa por los animalitos necesitados.

Compasión significa ser amable con otros cuando se sienten tristes.

Tenemos compasión cuando ofrecemos ayuda para que alguien se sienta mejor, aunque sea de una manera pequeña.

Cuando nos preocupamos por otros, eso es tener compasión.

Los avisos y posters que pusimos en todos lado, ¡funcionaron!

¡Ya encontramos a la familia del perrito!

¡Y nos dijeron que se llamaba Bon-Bon!

Le quitaron el collar para darle un baño esta mañana cuando se escapó corriendo de la casa.

¡La familia estaba bien preocupada!

Qué bueno que resulto aquí en la escuela, donde lo encontré, antes de que le pasara algo.

Cuando vino la familia a recogerlo, me dieron un abraso fuerte, y me dijeron que era un niño con mucha compasión.

Y sabes... eso me puso a pensar en las cosas especiales que pueden hacer los perros para ayudarnos.

Y mira, encontré este video.

(clics del teclado) - [Locutor] Como mascotas o mejor amigos, los perros pueden ser una linda parte de nuestros hogares y familias.

Pero algunos perros son increíblemente especiales, porque tienen tremendas habilidades que nos ayudan de maneras muy importantes.

Perros de pastoreo, como los border collies y pastores australianos, son muy inteligentes y tienen mucha energía, perfectos para manejar rebaños de ovejas.

Usan su instinto natural - y su entrenamiento - para guiar a los animales - por los campos, de forma segura.

Y también ayudan con las tareas diarias de los rancheros - que serían mucho más difícil sin ellos.

Los perros "de búsqueda y rescate" están entrenados para encontrar personas desaparecidas durante emergencias y desastres naturales, como terremotos y avalanchas.

Su determinación y profundo sentido del olfato, los convierte en miembros importantísimos de los equipos de rescate.

Los perros de terapia ofrecen apoyo emocional a personas en centros de asistencia, hospitales y escuelas, o después de haber sufrido eventos traumáticos.

La tranquilidad y el carácter amigable que tienen estos perros ayuda aliviar la ansiedad, y brindan alegría a las personas que la necesiten más.

Estos diferentes trabajos muestran cómo los perros pueden usar sus habilidades especiales, para hacer el mundo un lugar más tranquilo, seguro, y mejor.

¿Como se maneja cuando vuelas?

Bueno, antes de que choque, y mientras salgo de este sueño volador, vale más que ustedes regresen al salón de clase.

(gritos agitados) ¡Wooo!

¡Joo-joo-joo!

(sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Señora Cecilia] Hoy aprendimos qué significa la palabra "compasión" y la importancia de preocuparnos por otros, sean personas o animalitos.
