Where there was dancing and singing and moving to the groovin And just when it hit me, somebody turned around and shouted play that funky music white boy Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, this is Rhythm Lounge.
My name is Manny, and again, we're here with Nojac a massive 12, sometimes 13 piece band.
As you guys can see.
Guys thank you so much for joining us and taking time out of your busy days.
I know it's really difficult to get 12, 13 people here all at once, so thank you guys so much.
First off, Zach, I already know you.
If you can introduce yourself and, share with us what instrument you play.
Yeah, sure.
My name is Zach.
I play the rhythm guitar in Nojac.
Me.
Well.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Jhumaani Chess And I am one of the vocalist and dancers here in the group.
And, I'm John, I'm a drummer.
So.
Yeah.
My name is Alicia.
I am also one of the vocalists in the group.
So when watching you guys perform, one of my first questions was, sheesh, it must be quite the task to get all of you guys together at once to rehearse.
And so, John, I believe you were telling me that it's kind of a mission to sometimes rehearse, tell me what the rehearsal process typically looks like.
Who's usually the late person?
Oh, God.
Oh, who's the first one there?
And how do rehearsals usually get coordinated?
Oh yeah.
So I typically try to get everyone there on Fridays.
We have a set time every single week, and if you show up you show up.
If not, at least tell me, most people are actually pretty good with it.
So we get a pretty decent, like amount of people there.
Jhumaani right here Let me tell you I'm always like a little late.
Yeah, we have his own time.
Oh my gosh.
Jhumaani time, please Better late than never okay so what do you guys.
What consists of a rehearsal for Nojac What does that look like?
Usually, yeah.
So typically we'll take in about an hour and run through every song that we're going to have for, like, upcoming shows, our basic set list.
Recently I've been working on original songs.
So sometime in the future that will come out and yeah, so about an hour or two, just a typical, like, practice, running through stuff.
Gotcha.
And, Zach, if you can give us a quick rundown on every type of instrument that the band consists of.
Yeah, sure.
So the Nojac backline consists of John on drums, myself and Myles on guitar and then Jan on bass, and then we've got Julie on keys.
She also does some background harmonies.
And so our lead vocalist Jhumaani and Alicia, and then we've got an awesom horn section Ivan on trumpets.
Sorry.
Ivan on trumpet.
Scott.
Oh my gosh, sorry.
Trumpet.
Isaac on trumpet as well.
And then, Nathaniel on Bari and then, Scott on trombone and then Luis on tenor sax.
Let me find out.
You're just meetin all these people for the first.
No.
So this is for Jhumaani who taught you your moves?
Oh, my gosh.
I've been doing this for a long time.
I've been looking at I want to start looking at.
But I want to say I derive a lot of my inspiration from, some really good, pop locking and dancing and some of that Motown.
So, like James Brown, Michael Jackson, especially Michael Jackson.
And, I don't know if you've ever seen, Little Richard.
He's pretty good, too.
I don't know if you ever seen him.
He's he goes down and, Bruno Mars.
So.
Yeah, that's that's kind of all.
I like to get it and try to help these guys out, too.
I mean, I tell them the bust move, get a little comfortable.
At least, they be stiff And what about you?
What what sort of inspires you as as an artist?
As a musician, as you know, you got moves to see who inspire you.
So I would say I guess a lot of people nowadays listen to like, pop and like, more current songs.
But I like to, like, listen to more soul music.
Like you said, Motown music, R&B, stuff like that.
Especially, when it comes to singing too.
So yeah, that's awesome.
What?
You guys are going to stick around, right?
Yeah, yeah.
Thank you so much for tuning in.
We will be right back after this quick break.
Ooo, very superstitious.
Ladders bout to fall 13 month old baby This field is very collaborative.
So coming in with a collaborative kind of mindset is very beneficial for you.
I've always enjoyed storytelling, and whether that's news or through radio or through TV, it was always just very fascinating to me.
It's very helpful from thi program that I learned all roles and so now when I am on set I'm able to know what everyone is doing on set.
And that is something that I've learned here that I haven't learned anywhere else.
This school specifically is really good about that, because they're really good at making you figure it out, kind of guiding you, but not forcing your hand as in like doing it for you And then it just really set it.
You get to learn why it doesn't work.
Welcome back Inland Empire again.
We are here with Nojac the ginormous funk band 12 piece band today.
Sometimes they have 13, but I'm so grateful for you guys joining us and sharing your talent.
What would you guys sa is influences your guys's sound?
When it comes to, you know, th instrumentation and the vocals.
Right.
Oh, okay.
Well, we derive, a lot of style from popular funk band groups.
A lot of Motown especially.
We try to drive, specifically one of the most, best famous, funk band groups out.
There's a Tower of Power, and we love to play a lot of the songs.
We have like 3 or 4 songs in our set alone.
So if you hear, us to get a chance to do a full set, you'll get a chance to hear all that good stuff.
And we also like to do Motown and and stuff like, I want to say th Average White Band in all funk.
Anything you can think of, we can only play for you.
So just give us a call.
Oh, we got you, we got you.
Yeah.
And this is a quick question for all of you guys.
You know, the state of music in the music industry and being a local artist has changed tremendously, especially in the past decade with social media apps and, you know, the just music and video going viral, songs going viral.
What are your guys's thoughts on that?
Do you are you guys a fan and supportive of the new way of sort of making it in the industry, or are you not?
Yeah.
The music industry has changed a lot in the past decade, pretty much.
If you want to be like out there and being a musical like influencer at all, you have to have a social medi presence, because if you don't, you'r not going to make any progress.
So being someone who's no very good at social media, I'm very glad to have like Alicia and like Julia and everyone around who, like, has a little better like experience during that.
Yeah.
It's been it's interestin seeing how the world has changed in terms of like, you can't just go out an play music and then meet people.
You have to have that online presence and kind of get more experienc and connections through online and people contacting you like that.
Gotcha.
So, so speaking of playing music, where have you guys played?
Where are you playing next in?
Where do you guys want to play in the future?
All right.
Well that one's for me.
We we perform out of the Inlan Empire and Southern California.
One of the few places we have played is at the Beaumont Tree Festival.
Also, the Canyon in Montclair and, the Yucaipa Performing Arts Center, just to name a few.
We've also opened up for amazing, bands like Deira and Mallow and Berlin.
And one time we even got a chance to open up for the YMCA.
So it's it's been quite the adventure.
But.
Yeah.
Where can we find more of Nojac online?
Yeah.
You can, follow us on Instagram @Nojac_official.
Awesome.
Everyone and you guys are going to perform one more song for us.
What's the name of that song?
This is actually our medley of, Donna Summers.
So.
Yeah.
Stay tuned.
Awesome.
Sounds great.
In my experience, it was such a challenge.
Figure out how to change.
Like the way that I, like prepared myself before a scene and then also like, a part of it as well.
But I think everyone else had the same issue.
Not issue, but the same kind of obstacle in terms of like the time that we had to work together and like really get it going because there's only so much you can do when you're working on film.
Hi, I'm Lucas Cuny, I'm chair of the film TV media department her at San Fernando Valley College.
I think mainly what students can expect is to be surprised.
I don't think they understan all what this industry entails.
The opportunity to fail is here.
You're not gonna be able to fail on set when you're getting paid, but you can fail here and know that that's going to be a learning opportunity.
They give you the information and then they force you into groups of people, which is exactly how to be on set.
And they're like, now you're going to do it, you're going to do it.
You're going to mess up a thousand times, and then we're going to make you do it again.
And then it makes you learn really fast what you want, how you want to do it.
[music playing] Someone found a letter you wrote me on the radio.
And they told the world just how you felt.
It must have fallen out of a hole in your old brown overcoat They never said your name.
But I knew just who they meant.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh I was so surprised and shocked.
And I wondered too.
If by chance you heard it for yourself.
I never told us soul Just how I'd been feeling over you.
Because they said it really loud.
They said it on the air.
Toot toot, hey, beep beep Toot toot, hey, beep beep Toot toot, hey, beep beep don't it kinda strike you sad when you hear our song Things are not the same.
Since we broke up last June.
The only thing that I want to hear is that you love me still And that you think you'll be coming home real soon.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh Kind of made me feel proud when I heard him say you couldn't find the words to say it yourself.
But in my heart, I know I can say what I really feel.
Cause they said it really loud.
They said it on the air, On the radio Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh On the Radio Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh On the radio.
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh On the radio Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh On the radio [music playing] Sittin' here eatin' my heart out Waitin Waitin' for some lover to call Dialed about a thousand numbers lately almost rang the phone off the wall.
