♪ (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] This weekend, we brought home a new family member and his name is Paco.

He has a lot of hair, a long tongue, four legs and a tail that wags a lot!

We got a puppy!

(puppy barks) He's so cute, even when he ate my dad's slippers!

I tried to teach him some tricks, but all he did was lick.

He loves to play and go on walks, but most of all, Paco loves to cuddle.

He's really nice.

(bell rings) Oh, time to go to class.

I can't wait to tell all my teachers and friends about my new furry little brother!

(bell rings) - [Barry] Well, hello!

How do you do?

School is in session and all this talk about pets has got me pumped.

Since I was a baby bell, I've wanted a pet.

I just don't know what kind to get.

Oh, speaking of pets, head to Miss Celena's classroom because there is this totally cool tortoise that you've got to meet!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Celena] Where's Gilbert?

(pop!)

Peek-a-boo!

(pop!)

(she chuckles) Oh, hi.

I was just teaching some tricks to our class pet, Gilbert the Tortoise.

(pop!)

A pet can be so much fun.

Pets can be playful.

They give us love.

And, they teach us the importance of patience, compassion, and caring for a living thing.

Pets can also help people.

But, pets can be a LOT of responsibility.

They need to be fed, cleaned, and cared for.

Some pets are easier than others.

Gilbert here is a pretty chill tortoise!

He stays in his tank and hangs out on his rock all day.

I have to make sure it's the right temperature; not too hot, not too cold.

He eats dried fruit and leafy vegetables and drinks a lot of water, and he loves it when I read him stories.

Isn't that right, Gilbert?

♪ Today's story is all about pets.

It's called "Just the Right Pet," written by Trish Holland and illustrated by Hannah Neale.

(reading) "The animal shelter is open today.

"We go there to find a new pet.

"My mother and father and brother "and I will pick out the best one to get.

"It might be a kitten (meowing) or maybe a cat.

"It could be a puppy or dog, (dog barking) "a ferret, a rabbit, or even a rat.

"No goat, not a duck, not a frog.

"A horse (horse neighing) or a donkey is really too big.

"We don't have a barn at our house.

"We see many creatures we think are too small: "a gerbil, a turtle, or mouse.

"My dad says, our pet must be most well-behaved, "not messy and can't be too loud.

"My brother, he claims it should know lots of tricks "to make it stand out in the crowd.

"The pet that I want must be funny and fast, "like to wrestle, play ball, and to ride.

"But mother prefers something cuddly and cute.

"Oh, how can we ever decide?

"There's long hair and short hair or no hair at all, "and ears that stand up or just flop.

"Some animals sing and some animals jump.

"Of course, there are those that can hop.

"And big ones and small ones, with spots or without, "terrific no matter the age.

"So many to look at, it's hard to decide.

"We walk round and round, cage to cage.

"We think, and we talk, "and we make a long list.

"Each animal there, we discuss.

"At last, we are finished.

"We've done it," I shout.

"This pet will be perfect for us.

"This creature is loving "and quite well behaved, "knows tricks, likes to fetch, and to run.

"We found the right pet.

"He's the best of the best.

"Surprise!

"We picked more than one!

How did you like that story, Gilbert?

(Gilbert squeals) Oh, good.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Pets are the best.

(bell rings) (pop!)

Oh, Gilbert!

Don't be scared.

That's just Barry the Bell sending us to our next class.

Good boy, Gilbert.

You're a brave tortoise.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] I like Gilbert the Tortoise.

He seems like a really nice guy.

I just wish he'd come out of his shell a little!

(ba-dum-tiss!)

(Barry laughs) What do you get if you cross a tortoise with a giraffe?

A turtleneck!

(crowd groaning/booing) Tough crowd.

Aw, come on.

They can't all be winners.

You think it's easy up here?

Anyway, while I work on some more jokes, why don't you head out to the playground for a fun follow-along game with Eddie?

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] One of my favorite games is Animal Dance.

It's real easy to play.

When I call out an animal, we all move the way that animal moves.

Ready?

Rabbit.

(bouncy sounds) Snake.

(snake hisses) Monkey.

(monkey screeches) Cat.

(cat meows) Elephant.

(elephant trumpeting) Awesome!

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Barry] Eddie isn't the only one who can do the elephant.

Hmm.

Who knew I was so good at impressions and jokes?

How do elephants talk to each other?

On the elephone!

(ba-dum-tiss!)

(Barry laughs) What do elephants do when they're bored?

Watch elevision!

(ba-dum-tiss!)

(Barry laughs) How do elephants keep cool in the summer?

With ear conditioning!

(ba-dum-tiss!)

(crowd groaning/booing) Okay, okay.

That's enough from the peanut gallery.

Now, it's time to go back to Miss Celena's classroom.

She's got a game for you.

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Celena] I was just thinking we'd play a fun game called "Pet or Wild Animal."

See?

Not all animals can be pets.

A pet is a domesticated animal that lives with humans who take care of them and provide them food and a place to live.

A wild animal lives on its own without any help from humans.

Wild animals find their own food and shelter.

They aren't tame.

When an image comes on the smartboard, see if you can guess which is a wild animal or a pet.

Let's start.

(chewing sounds) A guinea pig.

Pet!

Guinea pigs are small and love to be cuddled, but they do poop about 100 times a day!

So, they need a lot of cleaning up.

♪ A fox.

Wild animal!

A fox is very shy and needs a lot of space in nature to roam around and look for food.

They're expert hunters.

They eat rodents, frogs and earthworms.

Yuck!

♪ Koala bear.

Wild animal!

Don't be fooled by how cute and cuddly these creatures look.

They do not like to be held or touched, and can really scratch if you're not careful.

♪ Monkey.

Wild animal!

Even though monkeys are a lot like humans, they don't make good pets.

They prefer to live in trees and can destroy your house and make it stink because when they poop, they like to throw it.

Ew!

(water burbling) Tropical fish.

Both!

Tropical fish can live in the oceans and also be wonderful pets.

They're so beautiful to look at and very easy to take care of if you have a good fish tank and the right food.

(playful horn honking) (bell rings) - [Barry] Oh, if only I could have my own pet, I'd be such a happy bell.

But my lifestyle just isn't conducive to taking care of an animal.

I guess I'll have to live vicariously through Miss Celena and Gilbert.

(Barry sighs) Such is life.

(bell rings) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Celena] Pets can be really fun, but they can also be a lot of work.

Learning how to care for your pet is really important.

Speaking of learning, let's review everything that we learned today.

First, we read a book called "Just the Right Pet."

"We found the right pet.

"He's the best of the best.

"Surprise!

"We picked more than one!

Then, Eddie led us in a fun game of Animal Dance.

- Rabbit.

(bouncy sounds) Snake.

(snake hisses) Monkey.

(monkey screeches) - And, we played a game called Pets or Wild Animals.

Guinea pigs are small and love to be cuddled.

Wild animal!

Pets are like members of the family.

They need love, attention, food, and shelter.

They also need training and patience when they make accidents!

It takes a lot of responsibility to have a pet, but it's really worth it.

(bell rings) Oh, there's Barry.

Class must be over.

Time for your nap, Gilbert.

(playful horn honking) - Well, that was a fun day, but I must admit, I've really missed my dog, Paco.

(phone alarm rings) That's my alarm, reminding me that it's time to take him for a walk.

I better get home.

After his walk, I'll play with him and give him his dinner.

I sure hope he didn't make a mess or get into any trouble while I was gone.

We'll see!

(playful horn honking) - Now, let's go in español!

"Encontramos la mascota precisa para nosotros.

"Es la mejor de todas.

El zorro es muy tímido y necesita mucho espacio en la naturaleza para caminar y buscar comida.

Son cazadores expertos y comen roedores, ranas y lombrices.

No te dejes engañar por lo lindo y tierno que lucen estos animales.

No les gusta que los carguen ni que los toquen, y no te les acerques porque te pueden arañar y hacerte mucho daño.

¡Estos si son muy peligrosos!

♪ ¡Animal salvaje!

Aunque los monos se parecen mucho a los humanos, no son buenas mascotas.

Prefieren vivir en los árboles y pueden destrozar tu casa y hacerla apestar porque cuando hacen poo-poo, les gusta tirarla.

¡Ewww!

♪ Pez Tropical.

(sonidos de agua burbujeando) ¡Ambos!

Los peces tropicales pueden vivir en los océanos y también pueden ser lindas mascotas.

Son muy bonitas a la vista y muy fáciles de cuidar... si tienes una buena pecera y la comida propia.

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Ayy, como quisiera tener mi propia mascota.

Sería una campana muy feliz.

Pero mi estilo de vida simplemente no es apropiado para cuidar un animal.

Supongo que tendré que vivir indirectamente a través del maestro Leo y la tortuguita Gilbert.

(suspira) Así es la vida.

(sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Sr. Leo] Las mascotas pueden ser muy divertidas, pero también requieren mucho trabajo.

Las mascotas son como miembros de la familia.

Necesitan amor, paciencia, atención, comida y refugio.

También necesitan entrenamiento y paciencia cuando tienen, tú sabes, "accidentes."

Tener una mascota requiere mucha responsabilidad, ¡pero realmente vale la pena!

(sonido de campana) Allí está Barry, la clase se ha terminado.

♪ Es hora de tu siestecita, Gilbert.

(bocina jugetona) - [Eddie] Wow, este día fue bien divertido!

Pero la verdad es- que sí extrañé mucho a mi perrito Paco.

(suena la alarma en teléfono) Allí está mi alarma, avisando que es hora de llevarlo a caminar.

¡Vale más que me apure para llegar pronto a la casa!

Después de caminar, voy a jugar con Paco y darle de cenar.

¡Espero que no haya tenido ningún "accidente," hecho un desastre, o que se haya metido en algún tipo de problema mientras yo estaba en la escuela!
