I would like to introduce, and help me please, thank the-- what are we calling it now?
The Summer Festival Orchestra!
(audience applauding/cheering) The wonderful ladies and gentlemen of the Summer Festival Orchestra, under the direction of Nolan Livesay.
(audience applauding/cheering) As far back as I can remember, there was music in my home.
Of course my dad, Pat Boone, was in his prime when my mother had four kids in three and a half years.
My mother was really the first musical influence, I think.
My dad was out singing but my mom was home teaching us how to sing because she came from a musical family.
Her dad was a country and western gospel singer from the Grand Ole Opry, and his name was Red Foley.
And, she grew up singing with her sisters and loving harmony.
And she ended up in a girl's group, singing the Anita Kerr Singers.
And then, she married my dad and had to give up all of her dreams of singing professionally.
So, she instilled in us this love of singing in harmony and singing all the time.
So if there was ever any company, she lined us up in order of age and height- little stairsteps all dressed alike- and we would sing for company in four-part harmony, and sometimes five if she sang the fifth part.
So, that's how I grew up in a musical home.
My dad would come home and sing the bass part but like any musical family, it was just a part of the fiber of our lives.
But, I got my first taste of being on a stage and performing to a very appreciative crowd.
And, I knew at 14 that that's what I wanted to do with my life.
When you're one of four girls, you look for ways to stand out.
And I was the shortest, littlest of the four of us but I had the biggest voice.
And people would comment and say, "For a little girl, you got a big voice."
We ended up recording as a family and I usually was given the solos or the lead parts and that kind of thing, and loved being in the recording studio.
I still do to this day, and creating something that's lasting.
And, I love being on stage and interacting with an audience, as well.
My very first attempt at being a solo singer was to fly to New York and put my vocal on the track of a song called, "You Light Up My Life".
(chuckles) And, the rest is history what happened with that song and that opened doors I never imagined for myself.
Certainly, I didn't imagine that my very first solo recording was gonna take off in that way and give me a full-fledged career without really being prepared.
Luckily, I was somebody who'd been on a stage and had a real strong work ethic and knew a lot about music.
But, I had never stood out there by myself and it was a learning curve for me to figure out who I wanted to be as a solo artist on the stage.
And, it's been a wonderful journey that I just keep moving forward, not knowing what's next.

♪ ♪ ♪ (audience applauding/cheering) I wanted to think of something that had joy and celebration in it.
And I was on a little alone-time vacation and I heard a party happening in a neighborhood, a live band, and they were playing the music that I love.
And, it sounded to me like the music I heard coming out of showrooms in Las Vegas.
I mean, there were horns, and it just had that energy and that joy and glamour to it.
And I thought that's the next project I want: to have people have that feeling, that music that just makes you feel like you're part of something fun, like I felt when I was in Las Vegas with my dad who headlined there in the '60s.
And so, we put together a beautiful album that has a lot more energy and fun, and it really became the album and the show that I needed and wanted to do.
And, it's perfect for this venue here and this summer festival, 'cause for the same reason, it's just time to have some fun and lighten up and just have joy together.
And so, lots of great arrangements, lots of swing vibe to it.
You know, it's not exactly what we would call swing music, but you can dance to it.
So, there'll be a little bit of everything for everyone And, I'm anticipating having a whole lot of fun myself and I think it will be contagious!

Oh, wow.
What a lovely evening this is.
You know?
In Las Vegas back in the day when all those entertainers were doing their shows, what they were waiting for after doing two shows, usually an eight o'clock show and the 10 o'clock?
Or, was it later than that?
Anyway, after they were all done doing the shows, they wanted to go to the Casbar Lounge at the Sahara Hotel and be entertained by the great Louis Prima, Louis Prima and the Witnesses.
And a lot of fun was had in that lounge, I'm told.
I was way too young to ever go see what was going on there.
But I knew a lot of people wanted to get into that lounge and hear all the good music and see all the people that were coming to see Louis Prima and the Witnesses and Keely Smith.
And, you know, I never got to know Louis Prima, except that he was the voice of King Louis in "The Jungle Book".
(audience chuckling) Okay?
So, we all know the voice of King Louis in "The Jungle Book"!
So, he's still King Louis to me, but truly the King of Swing, Louis Prima.
